Obstetrical Hypertension
Alere Obstetrical Hypertension Management provides home-based assessment, surveillance and support of patients who have gestational hypertension or mild preeclampsia. Preeclampsia includes high blood pressure and elevated levels of protein in the urine that cause swelling, sudden weight gain and headaches.
If not managed properly, the disorder may progress to eclampsia, one of the most serious conditions of pregnancy. When patients become eclamptic, they have seizures that if left untreated, can lead to coma, brain damage and even death.
Alere services are designed to monitor blood pressure, provide an early diagnosis of symptoms of a worsening hypertensive condition and early intervention. Home-based programs for compliant patients with gestational hypertension or mild preeclampsia have been shown to safely reduce hospital days and costs of care when compared to inpatient management.
Candidates for this service include patients who have been diagnosed with gestational hypertension, chronic hypertension or mild preeclampsia, or hospitalized for hypertensive disorders in pregnancy and are ready for discharge with close surveillance.
